30.11.06 - PRESS RELEASE - Sharon Hodgson backs "Screening Saves Lives Campaign" in Commons
Motion.
Gateshead East and Washington West MP Sharon Hodgson has tabled a cross-party Commons motion praising the success of screening in reducing breast cancer deaths, but calling for
the programme to be extended for women over 70. Scores of MPs from all parties have signed in support of the motion.
Mrs Hodgson's Early Day Motion highlights that some women have to wait longer than three years between screening appointments and that the number of women eligible for breast screening appointments
is increasing. It also emphasises that many over 70s are still entitled to receive breast screening and urges the Government to back Breakthrough's Screening Saves Lives campaign.
Mrs Hodgson said:
"Screening has revolutionised cancer detection and treatment and saves thousands of lives every year. Women are entitled to be screened every three years, and if capacity is a problem then we must
find a way to increase it because treating cancer in its early stages is easier, less distressing for the sufferer, and less costly to the NHS.
I know cancer treatment is a priority for the Government, and I have urged the Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt to consider extending screening to women over 70, as they are the highest risk
group."
