Sharon has always worked towards a 21st century transport infrastructure in the North East. She is working hard alongside other MPs in Tyne and Wear to ensure that something is done to improve the region’s chances of new houses, new jobs and new investment. This means improving the roads, railways, bus services and bringing the Metro up to date. Sharon has worked closely with Go North East, Nexus, ONE, The North East Chamber of Commerce and The Journal’s Go for Jobs campaign.
Metro The Tyne and Wear Metro is a vital part of the regional economy. That is why Sharon is 100% behind the plans for Metro redevelopment in the coming years. By working alongside Nexus, Sharon hopes to help deliver the £600 million investment needed to bring the Metro into the 21st century.
Roads Sharon has met the Highways Agency and transport managers to press the case for greater investment in the region’s roads and is acutely aware of the need to widen the A1 Western Bypass. Sharon has asked questions in Parliament about the use of ‘Article 14’ orders to hold back road development. Sharon is also a keen supporter of the plans to develop an iconic bridge across the River Wear not only for the potential spin off benefits but also because such a project will also help to ease congestion on the Wessington Way into Washington from Sunderland during rush hour.
Sharon has also asked questions recently about how safe the roads in the region are. In the run up to Christmas she worked to find out how many deaths there had been in both Gateshead and Sunderland and how this compared to other local authorities.
Rail Sharon has been involved in working with Senior Executives at National Express to iron out potential teething problems since the company removed their franchise from GNER. Sharon is also a strong supporter of Grand Central who are running services from Sunderland to London on a daily basis. Sharon has been monitoring with interest investigations into the feasibility of re-opening the Leamside Line to enhance transport links across Tyne and Wear and will continue to keep residents informed of progress on the issue.
Buses Sharon has worked with residents of Washington to ensure that bus services do not leave stranded the most vulnerable in the community. As well as getting several routes redirected she is working hard to publicise LinkUp services and to improve the frequency of secured services across the constituency. Sharon was delighted when the Government introduced free bus travel for pensioners and is determined that all local pensioners have a good service which they can rely upon.
