Plea to Prime Minister for Children's hospice funding - 14.05.08

Sharon today made a public plea to the Prime Minister in an attempt to secure greater funding for children's hospice services.

Sharon waved a crystal angel, being sold by the Grace House Appeal, to a packed Commons audience saying that 'thousands of little angels' need support from palliative care services each year. She went on to highlight that children's services receive less funding than comparative services for adults. The Prime Minister said that the Government ' should do more and will do more' on what he recognised as a 'vexed issue' for many parents.

Sharon said:

"I wanted to take this issue to the top because for thousands of families who use children's hospices it is important that their children get the best possible levels of care and comfort whilst they are ill. I welcome the Prime Minister's comments and the fact that extra funding has already been made available but we must do more.

The Grace House Appeal is working tirelessly to try and build a hospice for the area and I wish them every success in doing so. Whatever happens the final decision about funding rests with the PCT and I will be meeting representatives from Sunderland to find out what the future holds for children's palliative care services locally."
