Sharon is supporting a Bill tabled by City of
Durham MP Roberta Blackman-Woods to tighten up licensing
regulations for lap dancing establishments.
The Bill is
being backed by over 70 MPs as well as the Fawcett Society and
Object.
Sharon said:
“The Government is clear that it wants to be on the side of the
people. I agree with that, and here is an excellent example of how
to put that sentiment into action. There has been tremendous
support from MPs, pressure groups, and members of the public from
my own constituency and beyond. Most of us agree that there are
areas in cities where perhaps adult entertainment is suitable, but
there are areas where it certainly is not. This Bill will give
local people and local councils more of a say over which area is
which."

That this
House supports extending across England and Wales powers currently
only held by London local authorities to license sex encounter
establishments; supports removing a provision from the Licensing
Act 2003 which has the effect of exempting lap dancing clubs from
this licensing category; notes that lap dancing clubs are part of
the commercial sex industry yet are currently licensed in the same
way as cafes and karaoke; further notes that amending legislation
would give local authorities the same licensing powers for lap
dancing clubs as apply to sex shops and sex cinemas; and believes
that this would be a crucial step in giving local people a better
say in licensing policy.
