Sharon today pressed Labour Minister Ed Miliband for his views
on introducing free school meals. Mr Miliband described the
campaign as 'ingenious' and added that he hoped Ministers looking
at the idea would do so sympathetically. Sharon's question followed
announcements that the cost of school dinners was likely to
increase to over £2 in the near future.
Sharon said:
" I wanted to point out that we have a broad coalition of
support for this idea. The Child Poverty Action Group and UNISON
are both fully committed to a fairer deal for families and children
and I'm glad to have them onboard. I think we have hit a nerve with
Ministers who realise we need to take big, bold decisions which
will benefit the future health of the nation if we are to show
people we are serious about building a fairer society.
I was pleased with Ed's response but I should point out that
this is not a one woman campaign, we've got support from MPs and
charities across the country but most importantly we have the
support of millions of parents who are feeling the pinch and are
now facing the prospect of the £2 school dinner."
