Sharon has recently been campaigning for better battery recycling facilities in the North East. Batteries are very bad for the environment, and Sharon has become convinced that we are not doing enough to encourage people to recycle. Worldwide, 15 billion batteries are thrown away each year, and the UK has one of the lowest collection rate of portable batteries in Europe.
Across the UK, only 7% of households recycle their disposable batteries, and 7 out of 10 people have never thought of recycling their batteries. Many people also use disposable batteries in appliances that could take rechargeable batteries, leaving for an awful lot of waste.
If not disposed of properly batteries can be a source of toxic waste and are environmentally unfriendly. The Government has committed to the Waste Resources Action Programme and has set out environmental targets, but Sharon has been urging politicians and Local Authorities to do more to make sure the recycling is possible and encouraged. Sharon also released a press release in the North East highlighting the importance of battery recycling.
