Sharon was asked to host a reception in Parliament to celebrate the success of Dyslexia Action’s scheme, Partnership for Literacy. The programme is currently running in 34 schools, one of which is Farne Primary School in Newcastle, and offers materials and support for teachers and pupils.
Sharon gave an opening speech, and then attendees heard from a teacher, parent and headmaster, and also Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families. All of the speakers praised Dyslexia Action for this innovative scheme that has been helping scores of children. Of 504 in the lowest 20% of readers across 21 primary schools who used the materials, around half moved out of the below average category.
Sharon gave her full support to Partnership for Literacy, saying,
“The results prove that even in a short time, pupils have benefited enormously from the programme. I know that dyslexia can be difficult to deal with and often causes low self-esteem in young people.
Dyslexia Action are using an holistic approach to help children with dyslexia and many people have congratulated them on making support available that has not only improved reading ability, but has also increased self-confidence of pupils.”
