Washington and Sunderland MP Sharon Hodgson today paid a visit to the Elite Community Family Intervention and Parenting Academy in Sunderland. The centre in Hylton Castle provides support to dozens of local families who face difficult pressures on their family life.

Mrs Hodgson said: “It’s not easy bringing up children at the best of times and for some families here in Sunderland the pressure can get a bit too much to bear. That is why the work done by the Elite Parenting Academy can make all the difference. We need to reach out to those people who can find the challenges of parenting difficult in order to help keep families together where possible and encourage children to reach their full potential.”

Dee Bracken, who helps to run the academy said: “It was great to be able to have Sharon here today. She showed a great deal of understanding about the issues which we are trying to rectify. We’re in the process of trying to develop an open door to the local community so that anybody who is having problems with their family can come and speak to us. We know that it is hard for people to admit that they need support with bringing up their children but it’s even harder for people to look for help and that is why we want to make it as easy as possible for people to do that. We are a Community Interest Company so we are not working for profit. We are working reconnect families.”
