  • Establishment of APPG Ovarian Cancer 19.07.10
    Sharon has been elected the Chair of the newly-established All Party Parliamentary Group on Ovarian Cancer. The group aims to provide a forum for MPs and Peers to discuss ovarian cancer related issues, and to raise areas of concern with the Government and other policy makers. The group is being supported by Target Ovarian Cancer, who Sharon has worked with closely in the past.     Last Wednesday Sharon attended a reception in Parliament by the London 2012 Organising Committee, which aimed to inform MPs of progress on the games so far and give them an opportunity to find our more about how the games would impact their own areas.   • Breakthrough Breast Cancer Reception 12.07.10
    Sharon recently spoke at and hosted Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s annual Parliamentary reception. The event was an opportunity for Sharon, as an officer of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Breast Cancer, to encourage MPs to sign up to the group and raise awareness of current issues surrounding the disease. The event also heard from Paul Burstow MP, Health Minister, and Andy Burnham MP, the Shadow Health Secretary, who praised the work which Breakthrough Breast Cancer is doing to support the thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer every year.     Westminster Hall Debate on Free School Meals 30.06.10  Sharon secured a debate in Westminster Hall on the topic of Free School Meals. This has been something Sharon has campaigned on for many years, and she was angered by the new Government’s decision to cancel Labour’s plan to expand Free School Meal provision. In her speech opening the debate she made the case for Universal Free School Meals; a number of excellent contributions were made by other Labour members, but she was disappointed by the response of Tim Loughton, the Children’s Minister, who claimed that it could not be afforded.     Electric Vehicles Reception 22.06.10  Sharon spoke to the All Party Design and Innovation Group’s reception on the topic of electric cars. Obviously this is something of great importance in Washington and Sunderland West due to the Nissan Leaf coming to the Nissan plant soon. Sharon gave a speech about the importance of electric cars to the regional economy and explained how the government needed to support the industry.     Government Support for Industry Debate 16.06.10  On an Opposition Day in the Commons, Sharon spoke on the floor of the chamber to hit out at the Government’s plans to abolish One North East. She spoke about the role played by ONE in supporting the low carbon vehicle industry across Washington and Sunderland and questioned whether the cuts were really necessary, arguing that removing the support which One North East provides to local businesses would put jobs at risk.     Sharon takes Oath of Allegiance 25.05.10 Just before the Queen's Speech debate in the Commons, Sharon was sworn in as a Member of Parliament, taking the Oath of Allegiance. The oath is as follows: "I swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God." Taking the oath means that Sharon can take full part in proceedings in the House of Commons from now until Parliament is dissolved again.     The Guide Dogs charity recently held a reception in Parliament to raise awareness of their ‘Talking Buses’ campaign. The aim of the campaign is to get equipment installed on buses which will announce the next stop and final destination of the bus to make it easier for blind people to know where they are.     On Wednesday Sharon attended a meeting between MPs in the North East and the Chancellor Alistair Darling to talk about Northern Rock. The events surrounding the bank in the past couple of years have had a huge impact on the company and those who work for it in Newcastle – having worked there herself this is an area of particular concern to Sharon.     On Tuesday members of the Communication Workers Union came to Parliament to lobby MPs about the issues facing Royal Mail, particularly its pension deficit. They were keen for the Government to take action to deal with the problem, particularly now that controversial plans to privatise Royal Mail have been shelved. Sharon was interested to hear about the issues facing workers’ pensions in the Royal Mail at the moment and is keen to be updated on the progress the Government makes in this area.     Last week the YMCA launched its manifesto in Parliament to build stronger and healthier communities.     Launch of Sunbeds Bill 13.01.10Last Wednesday Sharon attended the launch of the Sunbeds Bill, a Private Members Bill tabled by MP Julie Morgan and supported by Cancer Research UK. The bill would make it illegal for tanning salons to let under-18 year olds to use their sunbeds. MPs were told how thousands of children put their lives at risk by using sunbeds at such an early age, with their use being linked to the development of skin cancer.     Sharon attended the All Party Parliamentary Group on Basketball, which was an opportunity to meet leading figures from the governing bodies of the game in the UK to discuss ways to increase the profile of the sport in this country. Sharon takes a keen interest in basketball, and can often be seen at Newcastle Eagles matches cheering them on. Considering the success of the Eagles it seems a shame that more people in Gateshead and Washington don’t have the chance to watch the sport on TV and have the facilities to play it, and it is issues such as these...
