Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson stood shoulder to shoulder with Ed Balls as he launched his leadership campaign in the marginal Nottinghamshire consituency of Gedling.

Mrs Hodgson said:

"I believe we need a leader to rejuvenate and revitalise the Labour Party and behind whom we can galvanise and be a strong and united opposition to the ConDem coalition - in order to defeat them at the next election whenever that might be.

I have worked with Ed in parliament over the last 5 years and have been very impressed by not only his skills and abilities but also by his many fine personal qualities. He is strong and decisive yet inclusive with colleagues. Someone who always makes time to listen and hear your views whilst offering solutions to any concerns or problems. He is hugely intelligent and passionately driven towards achieving our Labour goals of a fairer more just society yet he is warm, friendly and collegiate and I truly believe he will make an excellent Leader of our Party and ultimately a great Prime Minister of our country.

I am confident that over the course of the next four months, as he gets out and about around the country meeting Party members as well as some of the 4 million people who will be taking part in the final vote for our leader, that he will set out his vision for our party and our country and that others will begin to see the Ed Balls I know and admire and will join me in voting for him when the time comes."
