Sharon has welcomed the news that Sunderland will play host to a major celebration of Armed Forces Day in Seaburn Park on 25 June 2011.

Sharon said:"This is great news. Sunderland already has a proud tradition of honouring the memories of servicemen and women no longer with us, putting on the biggest Remembrance Sunday parade outside of London, so I am sure that Armed Forces Day will be just as successful in celebrating the contribution of those who are still with us, and those who are still serving their country.

"I know from the Veterans Day celebrations I have organised over the past few years, as well as the Mayor's Armed Forces Day celebration last year, that Sunderland residents hold our Armed Forces in the highest regard. I therefore hope that people and local businesses will contribute what they can towards making June 25 a truly memorable day for all taking part."
