Sharon Hodgson has won the seat of Washington and Sunderland West with a majority of over 11,000.

In her victory speech she said "I first stood for Parliament because I believe everyone deserves their chance, no matter what their background, and I am delighted that the people of Washington and Sunderland West also want to see a future fair for all. I'll be a strong and authentic voice for my constituents in Parliament."

The full results were as follows:

• Sharon Hodgson (LAB) - 19,615 (52.5%)
• Ian Cuthbert (CON) - 8,157 (21.8%)
• Peter Andras (LIB DEM) - 6,382 (17.1%)
• Ian McDonald (BNP) - 1,913 (5.1%)
• Linda Hudson (UKIP) - 1,267 (3.4%)
