   Thomas Hepburn Memorial Service St Marys Heworth 17.10.09

Sharon attended the annual Thomas Hepburn Memorial at St Mary's churchyard in Heworth.  The service was led by the Mayor Coun John Eagle and the address was given by Ian Lavery, President of the National Union of Mineworkers.

It is documented that the first ever mass meeting of organised and unionised miners was at a place called Shaddons Hill near Blackfell Village in Washington, 1831.  They gathered to demonstrate unity in their endeavours to improve working conditions.
