Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Sunderland West and Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Keir Starmer MP, Leader of the Labour Party, is looking for the ideal candidate to join the hard-working, fast-paced and committed constituency office team to assist in casework.

Applicants should be highly literate, efficient and personable, with a good telephone manner, extremely well-organised with a strong attention to detail and a genuine passion to serve the constituents of Washington and Sunderland West.

This would be an ideal opportunity for a candidate with previous experience (9-12 months) as a caseworker, who is looking to work for an active Member of Parliament.

The role is offered as full time but requests for flexible or part-time work will be considered.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

• Critically analyse patterns of enquiries and articulate the findings in reports and communication with the MP and other staff members.
• Deal with large numbers of standard queries, as well as assisting on more complex cases from members of the public by phone, email, social media or face to face in a timely manner.
• Deal with large quantities of casework in a timely manner, drafting responses to constituents, gathering relevant information to assist with resolving cases, and liaising with the team or external organisations to resolve cases.
• Log all cases; monitor progress and ensure all identified actions are taken.
• Ensure records are kept and information managed confidentially in line with the data protection legislation
• Ensure that each case is dealt with promptly, sensitively, confidentially and accurately in accordance with the MP
• Manage and monitor social media enquiries, dealing with cases that do not need to be transferred to a higher level.
• Assist surgeries and other meetings and follow up as appropriate.
• Attend constituency meetings as appropriate.
• There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work occasionally.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

• Excellent written communication and organisational skills;
• Excellent time management and multitasking skills;
• Confidence interacting with members of the public;
• Capacity to manage a high and complex workload;
• Ability to produce quality written work at pace;
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
• Ability to manage and prioritise workloads;
• Ability to work effectively in a small team;
• Support for the aims and objectives of the Labour Party;
• Knowledge of caseworker. mp software desirable.

Initial contract will be for one calendar year, pending a successful probationary period of 6 months and further review towards the end of the contract.

Upon appointment, you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO).
