In the early hours of Thursday morning, my office, along with neighbouring offices, was destroyed in a serious attack.

This attack has also devastated other businesses in the Vermont House complex.

I understand that somebody has today been charged for this offence. I am thankful to the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and to Northumbria Police for their rapid response to the incident.

Thank you also to the many people and constituents who have been in touch to share their well wishes with myself and my team.

I want to be clear that there is no place in our society for this kind of violence.

I remain undeterred in my commitment to supporting my constituents in Washington and Gateshead South, as I have done for 20 years and which I will continue to do day in, day out.
